The assignment
For this assignment, the idea was to remake a famous work of art. I chose a picture of Frida Kahlo.
I think Frida Kahlo is a great artist and I have a lot of Respect for her, so I thought this was the perfect moment to choose a piece of her art.
Frida made many portraits of herself and I chose one of them and worked on it.
The Remake
The original
For my remake I have chosen for a digital 2d remake, I have chosen for this because I think it gives a nice and modern touch to the original work.
I have worked in Illustrator and have used the pen tool to draw small shapes of the original work, and filled them with the fill color, so they are the same colors. I am very happy with the final work because it is still very clear who it is.
It is also more abstract and that's what I like about it. Because of the gray tones of the original work, the green background jumps out even more but is not disturbing for the portrait itself (in my opinion).
When I was making this remake, I soon found out that I had to put a bright color behind it.
I quickly figured out that I needed to put a bright color behind it to give it a little more punch. Frida Kahlo was always very colorful with her paintings so I thought it was appropriate.
Above you see some color studies, they are cheerful colors. I decided to go for dark green, it looks calm and warm but also gives some extra color to the gray portrait.
